The Different types of Vegetarians by Monk Joe

The commonality of most vegetarians is that they don’t eat meat. But there is so much diversity among this culture that the health and spiritual benefits are starting to become more widely known to the meat-eaters.

Vegetarians will eat vegetables, fruits grains, nuts, and legumes. With tofu and meatless options, the grocery stores usually packs many vegetarian options to satisfy all needs. Recipes and cookbooks give us plenty of options to switch a little more easily.

Why should you become a vegetarian? http://www.monkme.com/2010/09/vegetarian-health-benefits/

From spiritual to ecological, the reasons are becoming more clear than just physical health. There are many types of vegetarians that range in all different foods and tastes. A trend of eating only raw or living foods has grown in the recent years. The belief is the process of cooking foods strips the essential nutrients rendering the food less nutritious. If consumed raw or slightly cooked over 100 degrees, the nutrients are retained thus giving our bodies better nutrition.

A vegan doesn’t consume any items that include any animal product or by product. Animal products such as leather are not used. Even white sugar is avoided because it is often processed and bleached by a substance in animal bones.

A Fruitarian will only eat fruits such as tomatoes. Fruits self-perpetuate with the seasons with it is believed that this method of eating is more balanced with nature and life. Lacto ovo vegetarians consume eggs, milk or cheese. A lacto vegetarian consumes milk and cheese products, but not eggs.

Macrobiotic diets include unprocessed vegan foods, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and allows the occasional fish. Sugar and refined oils are avoided. Sea vegetables and seaweed is a constant dietary staple.

Keep in mind that the more restrictive your diet, the more educated you need to become. Consult with your doctor to create a healthy lifestyle, diet, and physical regiment. A balanced routine with the necessary proteins and vitamins will give you a great start to a good health.

Below are the main types of vegetarians.

  1. Total Vegetarians: They consume only vegetables, beans, nuts, grains, legumes, and other such foods. They do not consume any animal products such as eggs, cheese, and honey.
  2. Vegan: Vegans do not eat meat nor eggs, dairy products, or processed foods containing these or other animal-derived ingredients such as gelatin. Many refrain from using animal products that may not contain animal products in the finished process, such as sugar and some wines. There is some debate to foods, such as honey, fit into a vegan diet.
  3. Lacto Vegetarian: will eat dairy products.
  4. Ovo Vegetarians: will eat eggs.
  5. Lacto Ovo Vegetarian: will eat dairy products and eggs.
  6. Pescetarian: will eat fish and seafood.
  7. Pollo Vegeterian: will eat poultry such as chicken, turkey, and duck.
  8. Flexitarian: mostly vegetarian with occasional meat consumption.

Give it a try. You can slowly work your way up the vegetarian ladder if you feel it beneficial. Many have lost weight, gained energy, and increased stamina. Remember to not be so hard on yourself. Go nice and slow. Learn your body’s needs and wants. Good luck.

Super Monk’d Food: The Fig

Super Monk’d Food: The Fig

Posted on 07 November 2011 by monkjoe

When most of us think of figs, we think of the old school Fig Newtons. These are tasty lil’ cookies that are both chewy with a seedy crunch. This fruit is often overlooked as a healthy, vitamin and mineral filled treat in our healthy diets.

Native to areas from India to Turkey, figs were one of the first to be harvested and cultivated. The Spanish brought them to the Americas in the 1500’s. Figs grow on the Ficus tree (Ficus carica), a member of the Mulberry family. They fully ripen on the branch and partially dry on the tree. They usually grow from June to late August. They thrive on hot, dry summers and rainy winters. From August to September they are allowed to fully ripen. They then fall onto a carefully prepared ground to further dry and become harvested. Figs are harvested many times per season. They range dramatically in color and subtly in texture depending upon the variety.

Some of the most popular varieties are:

Black Mission: blackish-purple skin and pink colored flesh

Kadota: green skin and purplish flesh

Calimyrna: greenish-yellow skin and amber flesh

Brown Turkey: purple skin and red flesh

Adriatic: the variety most often used to make fig bars, which has a light green skin and pink-tan flesh

Figs have a full flavor. Sweet and chewy, these fruits are also filled with crunchy seeds that give added health benefits. The fig tree has no blossoms on its branches. Instead the blossoms are inside the fruit itself. The crunchy seeds are actually many tiny small flowers.

Nutritional Benefits

These dynamos have extended health benefits. They hold about 5 grams of dietary fiber per serving. They are naturally fat and cholesterol free. They have zero grams of trans fat. Figs are also sodium free.

They contribute to the essential minerals such as 6% DV of calcium, 8% DV of iron, 7% of potassium, 6% DV of magnesium and 8% of copper.

Figs provide more calcium than milk, 2x dietary fiber than prunes, and 2x the potassium of bananas. (per 100 grams/3.5 oz.) Just eating 3 to 4 dried figs can give you one full fruit serving. These whole fruits are a great way to meet the necessary guidelines of 4.5 cups of fruits and vegetables per day.

Dried figs have high levels of antioxidants.

Lower Blood Pressure – Because figs are a great source of potassium, high contents of this mineral are beneficial to help control blood pressure. Since many people do not eat enough fruits/vegetables and eat foods high in sodium, especially processed foods, many are deficient on potassium. Research has proven that a diet in fruits and vegetables, such as the fig lowered their blood pressure. Dried figs contain phenol, Omega-3 and Omega-6. These fatty acids reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

Lose Weight- Figs have more fiber than any other common fruit. One serving can give you over 20% DV of dietary fiber only found in fruits and vegetables. Fiber and fiber rich foods can have a positive effect on weight management. Eating fig leaves can lower the levels of triglycerides. Triglycerides are the major form of fat produced and stored in the body. Elevated levels of triglycerides are commonly linked to obesity and heart disease.

Healthier Bones – Figs are a great source of calcium. This mineral helps promote bone density. The potassium found in figs may also counteract the urinary calcium loss caused by high-salt diets typical of most Americans. This helps in the furthering of bones thinning out.

Alkaline – Figs are highly alkaline, thereby supporting the body’s pH.

Cancer – Preliminary tests show that fig leaves may have the ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells. Further research is needed to confirm the validity of these tests. The fiber content in figs are thought to help with the ridding of colon and breast cancer type cells.

Diabetes – Research has shown that fig leaves have anti-diabetic properties. The American Diabetes Association recommends figs for a high fiber treat. Fig leaves reduce the amount of insulin needed by diabetic patients who need insulin injections. Rich in Potassium, figs help to control blood sugar.

Lower cholesterol- Figs contain Pectin, a soluble fiber. When fiber goes through the digestive system, it soaks up cholesterol and carries them out of body.

Prevention of hypertension- People used to take more sodium in the form of salt. Low potassium and high sodium level may lead to hypertension. Figs are high in potassium but low in sodium. So, it helps to avoid hypertension.

Prevent macular degeneration- Vision loss as we age is due to macular degeneration. Fruits and figs generally are good for prevention of this condition.

Sore Throat Relief- The high mucilage content in figs helps heal and protect sore throats.

monkjoe’s 5 Simple Steps to Meditation

Posted on 30 August 2011 by monkjoe

FacebookTwitterGoogle+AIMTumblrShare

Meditation is a great tool to practice on a daily routine. It often reconnects us to the flow of life and to see what is truly important. What is meditation? Why is it beneficial? The answers to these questions and more are discussed in the article “The Benefits of Meditation” featured on PickTheBrain.com.

In this article, I will show you how to meditate in the most basic of forms. Simply put, meditation allows us to be free from that constant chatter of inner talk and criticism. Once you are able to identify that voice, you shall see that majority of that inner dialogue does not serve you. Most of the time, it cripples you, your life, and your happiness.

Those who try to meditate often give up in time because of the difficulty in “connecting.” As they try to be still and find peace of mind, frustrations usually arise when meditation is forced.

Of course meditation does not work in this fashion. When you are connecting to the flow of the universe or God, it is similar to falling asleep. You must be focused but yet allow yourself to “just be.” How often have you had restless nights knowing you had to go to sleep, but yet could not force yourself to do so? The same is with meditation.

The following steps are guidelines for meditation. There is no need to sit in a quiet place or room and pretend you are Buddha. However if that works for you, great! I guarantee that you have reached this meditative state already in your life. Have you ever zoned out while driving home late at night, surprised to arrive at your destination in a blink of an eye? Have you ever washed the dishes and started to move automatically? Have you ever day dreamed, lost in a moment, thinking of nothing? That is mediation. It provides a moment of peace and clarity. These states are calming to the mind and have brought great wisdom and scientific discoveries. These steps will help you manufacture the same connection at your will.

Do what works for you. Find an activity that allows you to free your mind from the constant chatter. I personally meditate in various forms. I am often out in nature and take that opportunity to clear my mind with nature as a tool. Sometimes I play the guitar, sometimes I walk my dog, other times I listen to guided meditations. I find that I must switch up the routines so that mediation is always fresh and new. If not, I would be easily bored and no longer want to meditate.

Once you have mastered meditation, you will be able to connect to the Universe in all sorts of chaos and noises. However for beginners, a quiet place away from everyone will create an easier modality for success.

These steps can be adapted to whatever form of meditation you desire. Take some time to see what activities feed your soul and allow you to get away from this humdrum reality of life.

Step 1: Look

What do you see? What can you see? With your eyes, visually appreciate all the beauty around you. It is a very simple secret to life. Admire all the beauty that is around us constantly. Wherever you are, take the time to visually study the grandeur that is presented to you. How do the children look while playing on the swings? Find the beautiful patterns in the dirt. Enjoy the concrete jungle that is before you. Admire all the different tones and colors that blend with the shadows. Take it all in and find the beauty in all. Exhaust all forms of visual sight.

In time as you continue to practice, you will start to become aware of the auras and energy that color the environment around us. It has been scientifically proven that auras exist. We just have to train our eyes to see them.  A great way to practice is to stare at the trees in front of the bright blue sky. Allow your eyes to drift in focus in and out, and soon you will perfect this sight.

If there is something that you’re incapable of finding beauty, remember this. It is humans that place judgment on what is beautiful or not. In truth, all is beautiful. But if that’s too far a leap for you, allow yourself to then… understand. If you cannot appreciate the marbled texture and color of bird droppings, understand that these droppings exist because of the beautiful, singing, soaring birds. Understand that the rude lady is equally fearful and insecure. See things beyond the surface and appreciate what is hidden.

The eyes are the gateway to this world and reality as most know it. It allows us to function in the outer world. However our eyes force us to focus on everything external of us. Meditation allows us to find ourselves and connect with the spirit that resides in our soul.

Step 2: Taste and smell

Take a moment to acknowledge all taste and smells. There are many various subtleties of taste and smell one can access. If you are near the ocean, take the time to appreciate the salty air. If you are in the woods, take a moment to acknowledge the smell of oak and sap.

At this stage, it is important to remind yourself to maintain a constant cleansing breath. You want to be able to take deep breaths that penetrate every single inch of your lungs and belly. Breathe this way until you find your natural rhythm.

Some choose to envision thoughts of breathing in peaceful, light air. They choose to exhale their fears, insecurities and sadness away. Some breathe in strength. Others breathe out weakness. The mind, body, and soul are not three different entities. Working as parts to a whole, what you envision can turn to reality.

Step 3: Listen

What can you hear? What echoes around you? As you sit in your own silence, acknowledge all the sounds that surround you. Access all the different volumes and vibrations and single them out. Allow your ears to distinguish and differentiate the tones around you. Are their birds chirping? What does the ocean sound like? Does the wind rustle through the tree? Do the bees buzz?

Allow yourself to key into one frequency and one sound. Allow your mind to filter out all the other sounds to focus on one single sound. Go from sound to sound so that you become familiar with your surroundings. See the world with your ears. Allow yourself to find the peace in the chaos.

Go deeper and deeper.  In time you may hear the sound of the Universe… Om.

Allow your own breath to take you into this self hypnotic mode.

We are capable of hearing our own heart beats and breaths. These are part of the automatic biological functions that are needed in order to survive. If we are consciously aware of these functions, we could be overwhelmed with data. Meditation helps us be more aware of these functions so that we could further use them to our benefits. In time as you train your mind and ears to hear your own breathing and beats in meditation, we could understand our bodies and minds with greater ease.

Your breath and heartbeat will be with you wherever you go. In chaotic moments in your life, allow your breath to lull you into a state of peace. You have a choice. You can allow all the car horns and chatter to disturb your meditation. However that would be taking the victim role. Take a more powerful role in your life, by allowing every voice, beep, or yell to assist you in getting deeper and more hypnotic.

Step 4: Feel

Access all physical sensations in your body. Work through every inch of your body from the bottom of your feet to the top of your crown. What does your baby toe feel like? Go behind your eyes into your skull. What does your tongue feel like? The hair in your nose? Is your back curved over and stretched tall? Access and acknowledge it all. Exhaust all forms of feeling.

Feel your breath go in and out. Feel your chest rise and falls. Feel the thumping of your heartbeat. If you have pain in your body, don’t ignore it. Acknowledge the pain and ask your mind to let it go. Breathe and send oxygen to that pain. Visualize and imagine your mind and body connecting to the pain and letting the pain go. That is a basic premise in yoga. Yoga is designed to put you in precarious and uncomfortable positions so that your body stretches in new ways to open up bodily pathways to the universe. Often times there are moments of pain as a muscle you never use is tested.  The trick is not to ignore the pain, but to acknowledge the pain for what it is and then ask your body and mind to alleviate the symptoms.

Know your body in a state of peace. Understand how every thing affects your body in the internal world. Every behavior you have starts internally. If you are aware of these shifts in energy and chemistry, you can be able to process and make the best choice, versus reacting in fear, anger, or insecurity. This will prevent negative behavior such as drug/alcohol relapses, needy relationships and temper tantrums. It will also give you a greater understanding of your physical, spiritual and mental health as you are aware of your innerworkings.

Step 5: Clear your mind

This is the most difficult step for most. For some this is the easiest. After you have exhausted all forms of sensation, your last step is to clear your mind and think of nothing. For beginners, you may want to visualize and create an empty space in your mind and hold it for as long as possible.

You may want to imagine an empty canvas or chalkboard. You may want to create a room of empty space. Some envision a cave, river bed, or even basketball court. Use whatever image that serves you best to create the feeling of emptiness.

Your conscious mind will counteract this process by throwing all sorts of thoughts and ideas into your mind. All your fears, hesitations, joys, successes… anything and everything will pop into your mind to distract you. What did I have for breakfast? What’s for lunch? Did I pay those bills? My car needs an oil change. My mother ruined my life. I need more drugs…

Your mind is designed to distract you from connecting to the flow. Your task at this stage of meditation is to simply let it go. When any thoughts arise in your cleared mind, tell  yourself, ”not right now” and just let it go. Do this as soon as you are aware that your mind is processing these thoughts.

Your mind will wander. It is only natural as we have been socialized to be this way. There is no need to criticize yourself and meditative skills. It happens. Once you become aware that you have drifted off in thoughts, acknowledge them and let them go. There is no need to dwell and be hard on yourself. To do so will make it more difficult to find inner peace. Just say “Oops! Did it again. I’ll get better.”

When these thoughts pop into your mind, erase them from your canvass. Let the thoughts drift away in the wind or river. Again use whatever imagery that would allow you to let go of these thoughts. Imagination and inner peace are closely connected.

There will be thoughts that will demand your attention. Give it the attention it needs and let it go as soon as you can. Again you are not forcing this connection. It will come naturally when you are truly able to clear your mind for moments in time.

As you continue to practice and all yourself and mind to just be, you WILL connect. This moment may be brief, it may be long lasting. Regardless you will have this profound sense of beauty, truth, and wisdom. Once you have achieved this level, the next stage is to access this connection again for a longer period. In time, you will be able to increase your effectiveness and connect within seconds and be connected to the flow for days and lives.

Keep in mind, even the most dutiful and powerful beings who meditate have difficulty connecting. Often times, the real world will hammer you with unnecessary information. Working through the steps above will simplify the process to reestablish your connection.

Once you are able to hold this connection to the Universe with a clear mind, you can then use meditation as a tool for continued peace, happiness, and wisdom. You will have an open line of communication. The next level of meditation can be found here… “Using Meditation in a Practical World.”

Though at first the body may react in physically pushed manners, if the activity was constant one could achieve a similar calmness in mind, body, and spirit while hiking.

Treating Depression Naturally

Treating Depression Naturally

Posted on 07 December 2010 by Sandi Valentine

FacebookTwitterGoogle+AIMTumblrShare

If you suffer from depression, you may be surprised to learn that there are a variety of natural remedies and treatments available to help alleviate your symptoms. Many depressed patients report problems like feeling unexplainably sad or irritable, difficulty sleeping, or a general feeling of hopelessness. If you’d prefer to treat your symptoms without medication, these natural remedies and lifestyle changes may help.

Mood Maintenance

First, it’s important to work at regulating your body’s natural cycles as much as possible. This will, in turn, help to regulate your mood. There are three crucial components to mood maintenance – diet, exercise, and sleep. If you skimp on any of these elements of healthy living, you’ll soon find your mood suffering. If you have depression, a large part of feeling well is working to take good care of yourself.

When choosing what to eat, focus on high quality and nutrient rich foods. Avoid highly processed foods, large amounts of sugar, and foods with artificial colors and flavors whenever possible. This “junk food” has very little nutrition and will often make your energy levels shoot up and then plummet, leaving you feeling even worse. Instead, choose low fat dairy, lean protein, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. This high quality nutrition will help provide your brain with the vitamins and minerals it needs to function optimally.

Sleep is another important part of mood maintenance. Many patients who suffer from depression experience either insomnia (inability to sleep) or hypersomnia (sleeping all the time). Either can be exhausting and quickly lead to problems with your mood. For this reason, it’s important to set a regular waking and sleeping time. Stick to this schedule, and be sure you’re getting enough sleep. If you find yourself wanting to sleep all the time, spend more time outdoors. Exposure to daylight will help your body to regulate its Circadian rhythms.

Exercise is another great way to maintain your mood. Some studies, in fact, have shown that regular exercise can be as effective in treating depression as a low dose antidepressant. When you exercise, your body produces feel good chemicals (known as endorphins). These chemicals can help you naturally regulate your mood.

Herbal Remedies

Please consult your doctor before action.

There are also several herbal remedies available to treat depression and its symptoms. Many people turn to herbs such as St. John’s Wort and Valerian to help regulate their moods and control the unpleasant symptoms of depression.

St John’s Wort

St. John’s Wort has been proven to be extremely helpful for patients who suffer from mild to moderate depression. In some patients, it’s been as helpful as chemical antidepressants. The herb is commonly available at most health food stores or online, and can be consumed in a variety of forms. The herb is available as a tea, as a gel caplet, or as a tincture. It should not be taken if you are currently taking other antidepressants, are nursing, or are pregnant.

St. John’s Wort has been used for hundreds of years in folk medicine as a natural cure for depression. Like antidepressant medications, however, it can take several weeks to reach its full potency in the body. This means that if you start taking St. John’s Wort, you should expect to feel gradually better over a period of up to two months, instead of expecting immediate results.

Valerian

Valerian root is another herb that can be usefully for treating the insomnia and muscle pains often associated with depression. This mild sedative is made from the root of the Valerian plant, and has an unpleasant smell. It can be consumed as a tincture, a tea, or a caplet, but the caplets are often the easiest to take. The herb acts as a muscle relaxer and sleep aid, and can be especially useful for those patients who experience physical symptoms of depression along with their dark moods.

Supplements

Additionally, there are several supplements that can be quite helpful for those who suffer from depression. Fish oil (or another Omega 3 source, such as flaxseed oil) and folic acid are both extremely useful, as are B complex vitamins. These supplements all increase brain function and help take the edge off of depressive symptoms.

The brain needs Omega 3 fatty acids to function optimally. These acids are found in some fish and plants, but are generally not present in the diet in high enough amounts. Supplementing with Omega 3′s will help the brain function better, and should dramatically improve your depressed symptoms. This supplement is safe to take and often recommended, during pregnancy or nursing. It should be taken as a therapeutic dose (around 2,000 mg) both morning and night.

Folic acid also helps improve brain function, and is crucial to the development of infant and children’s brains, as well. If you’re pregnant or trying to conceive, chances are you’re already taking folic acid in the form of a multivitamin. Many cereals, breads, and other grain products are supplemented with folic acid, as well.

B Complex vitamins help the body fight off stress; they also boost energy levels naturally. If you’re feeling tired, cranky, and depressed, you may find that a B Complex vitamin will help you to feel less run down. They are available as tablets, but can also be found as sublingual or chewable pills for faster absorption.

If you’re suffering from depression, it can be tempting to simply give up and go back to bed. However, by adding a few supplements and making some lifestyle changes, you may quickly find that you’re feeling much better. If you’re hesitant to see a psychiatrist or counselor, you can try the above suggestions first, and treat your depression naturally at home.

Bubble Monk’d: Get Your Bubble On!

Posted on 28 November 2010 by monkjoe

FacebookTwitterGoogle+AIMTumblrShare

You Can’t Pop My Bubble!

That’s right. You are so powerful no one can mess with your mojo. You are in a good mood, and you will not allow anyone to mess with your wonderful day. You love yourself and won’t allow anyone’s fears consume you.

Lots of people are not so fortunate. They are quickly caught in the rat race that is fed from fears and insecurities. We all need to be more mindful in our days and having a “bubble” can create this opportunity.

Here are a few pointers to create your own bubbles.

What’s a Bubble?

A bubble is just a tool. It is a visual image that serves you in mindfulness and protection. It assists you in living in the moment of Zen.

Many have used the imagery of an actual bubble that surrounds to protect from bad energy. Some use the picture of a bright white light that surrounds their being. Some believe in Angels.

This is different from day dreaming or fantasy. This difference lies in the mindfulness needed to gather and center oneself regardless of the playfulness.

Bubble Activate!

When do you turn it on? Flip the switch when you need to be more present with your own emotions and thoughts. Be aware of when you start to feel anxiety, anger, and fear. Turn on your Bubble when you need to gather yourself and bring your mind, body and soul back to stasis.

When your parents are annoyingly arguing in the house, just turn on your bubble to find your peace. When you are being consumed by all the action and personalities of the day, take a moment to ground yourself. Find your center.

Anytime of the day when you are feeling opposite from calm, loving, and peaceful can be an opportunity to live in your Bubble.

Practice Blowing Bubbles

For your Bubble to provide you with the sanctuary your mind needs, you must practice. Practice imagining your Bubble when you have peace and clarity. Practicing while in good mental, physical, and spiritual health will allow greater ease in creating a strong Bubble.

While practicing, know that you are strong enough to overcome anyone else’s energy, emotions, and thoughts. No one will be able to upset your spiritual balance.

Start with small victories and then face full on fears. Take your time. There is no rush.

If you are already living in chaos, then don’t fret. It’s easy. Find a moment and create your Bubble. Do it now. It doesn’t matter who is around, or where you are. Just make it pop up in your imagination now.

And now there is a bubble.

I Want a New Bubble!

The Bubble is just an imaginary visual tool to help you be mindful and express true emotions. Like the Monk’d code, do what works for you!

Get off the daily roller coaster. Be grounded and centered. Be creative. Does it make you laugh? Feel strong? Peaceful?

Try these Bubbles on for size:

·       Try different colors, shapes, or types.
·       Visit favorite locale in the world.
·       Have mini ninjas swirl around to protect you.
·       Sit in the center of a whirlwind of light.
·       Put sea urchin spikes up to keep the negative thoughts away.
·       Become a superhero and let darkness bounce off you.
·       Bask in a heaven of clear, bright Light.

What is your Bubble like? Out of respect don’t be too crass!

Guide to Getting Monk’d: Healing the Mind, Body, and Soul

Posted on 28 September 2010 by monkjoe

FacebookTwitterGoogle+AIMTumblrShare

Life is simple. We are the ones who make it so darn complicated. There are many truths in the world, and most of them are quite simple. In our fear and insecurities, we create complex perspectives that make life much more difficult and enduring. In fact, life, despite all the perceived negatives, is quite fun and easy.

We become caught up in the newest technologies that drive us further away from natural tendencies. Admit it! I often get lost in the mundane iPhone apps or the next tech craze. But it never brings true happiness. Monks who live simplistic, minimalist lives often find more peace and love in their lives.  How does that work out?

What’s in a Monk?

Many see a monk as an isolated priest that lives in the mountains, praying and meditating for hours a day. Sure there are plenty of those. But in this new age of technology, growth and humanism, this term “monk” has evolved to a new definition.

A monk can be defined as someone who practices abstinence from unhealthy things, while living alone or with other like-minded monks. A tribe of monks can connect through a single purpose driving them usually for the betterment of self and mankind.

Now I am not expecting you to build a straw hut and wear robes all day. You don’t even have to shave your head and sit in the lotus position. But I may encourage you to meditate… while skydiving.

Get Monk’d!!!

We all should be monks at some level. We should learn to let go of all the things that are not in our best interest. No matter who you are, there is probably something in your life that does not serve you. Sometimes we enjoy a lil extra candy bar or tub of ice cream. Some of us still smoke and curse away. I have no judgments, so do what you must.

Getting Monk’d simply means living in awareness. Monks live in awareness. They live in constant evolution. They take the time to understand their fears and how they manifest them in real life. They find peace in the chaos. They know and live simple.

In this growing world, there are many things that will distract us. We are easily caught in a manufactured, fluorescent world. There are many, many hours I have wasted staring blankly at ESPN News for hours, watching the same highlights and the same commentary.  These machines can drown our spirit to thrive. Instead they numb us from the pains and weights we carry.

But I will not shun technology and human advancement. There are some amazing new tools, toys, and tricks that are available and they all have unique and valuable uses. Advances in science and education have brought new forms of art and expression. These are beautiful things that should be treasured. There is no need to run from technology. In fact, we must embrace it. However we must not allow it to consume us into brain dead and zombies.

The new evolved monks can appreciate the growing world around them, but yet still maintain a simplistic manner of living. They will become aware of their weaknesses and turn them into strengths. They learn to use the tools, but do not become dependant of them. They enjoy life’s extravagant pleasures, but never forget that they can easily be found in the simple things. They know when to have fun and be silly. They know when to focus and become determined. They know what gives them strength and what weakens them.

I have learned… I am nothing if not my health. Many of us assume we have our health until the fateful day where our lives are forever changed by a heart attack, trauma, or virus. The most powerful of men have been reduced to squabbling babies in illness and disease. Sickness keeps us humble, but can easily break our spirits.

But if we have optimum health, we are able to free ourselves from this rat race of humanity. This foundation of health creates a powerful, beautifully charged life. Good health is most critical. If we find complete health, we shall be free to truly enjoy and live life.  Please don’t make the mistake I did. Health doesn’t just mean physical health. I have learned it is so much more.

Getting Monk’d simply means living healthy. In this new monk perspective, health is the complete health of mind, body, and soul. For many years, doctors and scientists have contemplated the each entity as separate. But as new technology and scientific research advances, we are seeing how science and spirituality are very similar. The terms and lingo may be different, but they are different routes to the same conclusion.

The mind, body and soul are interconnected. They can work independently, but are part of and affect the whole. One can dominate the other, but it always results in sickness or illness. If the mind is strong but the body and soul is weak, you will wither away.  If your spirit is strong, but your mind is malnourished… you will suffer. All three must be health and vibrant.

Why Complete Health?

Getting Monk’d simply means finding balance. Once I have begun balancing my mind, body, and soul, my life became more peaceful and purposefully driven. Life became easier. We are at our best when we have mind, body, and soul health. When achieving this balance, we are at our strongest, most powerful, and happiest.

By working together, the mind, body and soul will be able to compensate each other. Often times there are sickness that is beyond our capabilities of healing. In these cases, the others parts of your whole can magnify and rebalance the interconnection. But for this to occur, we must continually foster our health to peak optimums.

The Mind

The Mind may prove most complicated of the three. The Mind is often chaotic and varies in personalities. Suppressed emotions and negative thoughts poison our frail human minds into mental relapses. Some of us are quick in temper. Others of us are best at playing the victim.

The Mind creates the perspective and views on reality. It colors it with joy and happiness, but it can also sour life with nightmares and trauma. An unhealthy mind will never be aware of oneself and one’s surroundings. Not only do you lose touch with reality, you also lose touch with yourself.

In fear, we often repress our underlying issues that prevent mental health. These become tuck away in our subconscious, forgotten to our day to day worlds. But their ugly presence always rears when we are at our weakest.

Therapy is a wonderful way to understand your Mind from another’s perspective. With this professional guidance, you will be able to not only find and also defeat your demons. A good therapist will provide opportunities for your Mind to uncover your weaknesses and fear. A therapist will help you change your thoughts and thus your behavior and actions.

A healthy Mind is active. It questions in search of true answers. You will need to further your mind through different forms of education. Learn through the arts. Study the human mind. Read poetic prose. Dazzle the Mind with brilliant displays of creative grandeur. Educate yourself. Set your Mind free by knowing what is possible, not what is self-limited.

Some ideas to give you a good start:

1.    Visit a local museum.
2.    Study the story, dialogue, and plot of your favorite movie.
3.    Take a community college course of your interest.
4.    Watch documentaries.
5.    Create new inventions.

The Body

Doctors and scientists are supposed to know the answers to our physical health. They should know what is wrong and how to fix it. But unfortunately, science cannot provide all the answers yet. Unfounded theories and guessing games in medicine have proven to be quite lethal. However, the knowledge we have established have saved millions of lives.

We must know our bodies inside and out. We should monitor our bodies with routine checkups. Establish a relationship with your doctor. Learn to trust each other. It will be important to get blood tests to see your different chemical and hormonal levels. If working with a therapist or treatment team, a physician would prove most valuable. As your Mind improves, so shall your health. The Mind and the Body interact with each other. Ailments can be created by the Mind and manifest themselves in the Body. Likewise, injury to the Body can affect the Soul and the Mind.

Discover what allergies you may have. Understand your illness and disease. Though there may not be immediate answers, you may find tips and tools to help manage a healthy lifestyle. Know how your body reacts to different stimuli, both internal and external.

Build your physical strength. Exercise your muscles. Allow weight training to gain muscular mass. Take long walks, runs, or hikes to strengthen your lung muscles. Build your endurance so that your Body can function at a high constant level. A trainer would be an excellent way to start, however everyone can build their own exercise routine with a bit of creativity and research.

Fuel your body with an appropriate and balanced diet. Each person has different nutritional needs. Your doctor or your nutritionist can assist you with your daily diet as well as supplements that will bring the Body back to healthy levels. Some of us love the salty snacks. Others love the sweet treats. I am not saying we have to rid ourselves from them. Perhaps a healthy balance would be best.

Find new, fun and engaging ways to strengthen your Body:

1.    Take a vegetarian cooking class.
2.    Go on picturesque hikes.
3.    Try sports such as rock climbing, surfing, and basketball.
4.    Get massages and body work to relax the muscles.
5.    Study a martial art.

The Soul

The Spirit is an important but often neglected part of our whole. Spirituality is difficult for most to define. In fact there is not one single definition that can help you understand this concept. Spirituality is the combination of thought, feeling, and action. It’s a way of living. It’s a way of thinking. It’s a way of behaving.

Spirituality is the bridge from the known and the unknown. It is how we humans connect what is comfortable to what is fearful. All of us, at some level pursues happiness. We are driven in different ways with different tools to find this elusive happiness. And as our personalities differ, our ideas of achieving happiness and peace will also differ. Some are happy and at peace with a small family in a white picket fenced cottage. Others are driven to change the world.  It takes all sorts to complete this universe. So spirituality shifts from person to person.

Some need the structure such as religion. Others prefer nature and a picnic. Some enjoy the peace and calm by a river bed. Others prefer to white water raft. Feed your Soul.

An unhealthy soul will empty you of any joy that can be found in life. It can bring the shadows the most beautiful sunny day. It will color life with gray and clouds, though your Mind and Body craves for light. Nothing will be interesting. Nothing will bring smiles. Anger and violence erupt with greater ease. Hatred is all that is seen in reflections.

When you establish a healthy Soul, you will understand your fears and separate yourself from the fears of others. You will allow constant evolution, become better and better in every moment. You will be aware of your surroundings and also your internal world. With this, you will be able to not react out of fear, but act in love. You will feel what is best and follow your instincts. You will help change the Mind and heal the Body.

You will no longer allow fear to consume you. You will know that everything is a gift. You just have to change your perspective.

A spiritual advisor or mentor would be wonderful to find. Find someone you trust and connect with. Find practitioners such as life coaches and spiritual therapists who are more concerned with your growth than bank account. Friends, family and church leaders are often great sources of spiritual guidance. Humbleness and love are important criteria, so make sure your advisor has just that.

But you can find this spiritual health on your own. You just need to educate yourself and commit to evolution. Visit spiritual centers. Explore different religions and cultures.

Spirituality has become a huge wave. MonkMe believes that spirituality is our future. We are all about to become enlightened. Read about old ancient wisdoms as they still apply today. Practice living in simplicity and honesty. Be mindful and aware. Express yourself.

Some Soul loving activities:

1.    Meditation – Yoga
2.    Create Art – Paint, sculpt, photograph, write
3.    Volunteer and work in charity
4.    Outdoor activities – Gardening, hiking, nature walks
5.    Learn a musical instrument – Sing

3 Steps to Turning Weaknesses into Strengths: Monk’d Style

Posted on 07 September 2010 by monkjoe

Life can be a beautiful thing. We evolve. We grow and become more aware our own beings. But when we become older and more experienced, we sometimes lose our childlike flexibility.

As children, we were able to flow and weave through life’s obstacles. We found ways to get what we want. We never liked hearing “no.” So if our father denied us, we simply went to ask our mother. Devious or persistent? No matter what the obstacle, we found inventive ways to accomplish the task at hand.

Our brains were not yet solidified with failure and heartache. Thus with whatever talents, gifts and tools we had, we made it work. We tried everything.

The Choice

Awareness is key to spiritual evolution. We must understand our strengths. We must embrace our faults and weaknesses. And with everything we do, there is a choice. We can sit idly by and depend on our strengths to carry us through life. Or we can learn to master our weaknesses so that we are no longer hampered by them.

If we choose to simply rely on our strengths, we will become dependant. The good news is that these strengths are highly functional and applicable for most of our lives. They are our tested and true gifts that we have mastered time and time again. We can pull our strengths at a moment’s notice to serve us in most conditions. They are our strengths for good reason. It is who we are.

But trust that there will be a moment in time that our strengths will be nullified. It is at this point, that our reliance on our strengths will cripple us. We will not know what to do, because who we are will not work in all situations. We are strong at some things, but yet also weak at others.

If we choose to master our weaknesses when our strengths are invalidated, we will still have other tools that can serve us. Evolution requires this.

Darwinism is an evolutionary theory that can be simply described as “Survival of the Fittest.” In nature, animals evolve genetically and behaviorally to survive the hardship of nature and the cycle of life. The genetic mutation of spots may create the perfect camouflage to hide from predators.

Some monkeys have learned to use a long blade of grass into termite hills to fish out a perfect snack and others have learned to dip in hot natural springs to avoid the harsh cold winters.

We as humans have this behavioral choice. Do we succumb to the pressures and pitfalls of life? Or do we face our greatest weaknesses and turn them into strengths?

I know what I choose.

3 Steps to Evolving Your Weaknesses

If you made the choice to evolve, then you are already doing well. Committing is difficult for many of us. But if we are able to commit to growth and becoming powerful, then this journey of turning weaknesses into strengths will be much easier. Committing allows us to not only take action, but to feel powerful in doing so.  By committing, we are disciplined and focused, not allowing our fears and anxieties to hold us back.

There are two different approaches to turning your strengths into weaknesses. One is a shift in perspective. The other is taking action that deliberately challenges our weaknesses.

But before we can do any of this, we must again be conscious and aware. This is a constant theme. Get used to it. To do anything powerfully, we must become aware of our own being.

Step 1: Identify

  • What are your strengths?
  • When are your strengths useful in your day to day life as well as in emergencies?
  • What can rely upon when you are most fearful?

Your strengths are valuable tools. Know what they are. Know when you can trust your strengths to serve you. Examine how these strengths bring you opportunities and solutions.

However, be mindful when your reliance upon your strengths create weaknesses. Many of us use our strengths to overcompensate for our deficiencies. For example, you may be the most humorous and entertaining guy. You can always bring cheer and laughter to anyone’s life. But are you cracking jokes and smiling, when really you are hurting inside? Are you using your charm and personality as a mask to hide the most vulnerable parts of your soul?

Perhaps intellect is your strength. But when you overly use your mind, and disconnect from your emotions you become a robotic mess. Face this truth.

  • What are your weaknesses?
  • When do you feel weak and afraid?
  • What it feels like when you “lose control.”
  • What thoughts and emotions nag at you?

Understand the things that don’t come naturally to you. See what obstacles in life seem more challenging than others. Your weaknesses can be very obvious. Some are cleverly hidden. Take time to explore your spirit objectively.

Take a step back and see the entire picture. Be honest with yourself. Consort with trusted others to help you see truths that are hard to see. Though other’s perspectives could be off target, gathering information can help give you a clearer perspective.

Ask the very important question of… Why?

To evolve your weaknesses, you must know what they are.

Step 2: The Shift

Life is a matter of perspective. Things can either serve you or consume you. What is an obstacle for one is an opportunity for another. We have heard these wisdoms time and time again, but yet it is very difficult to master… though easy to understand.

After a draining session of counseling a friend, you may feel wiped out and exhausted. Your choice is to look at this event as one that has depleted you to a zombie-like state, or one that has made you stronger after realizing you are capable of wonderful love.

You can pray to your higher power, begging “Please, please give me the strength.’ By doing this you are implying you have no strength and need an external source to supply it. Or you can pray and ask your higher power to simply remind yourself how powerful you really are in times of need. Essentially you would be praying for the same thing. However, the second version implies that you already have the strength inside. This is a more powerful stance.

I am colorblind. I can see some colors, but I simply don’t see the world the way you all do. I can barely dress myself, as colors clash all the time. What I thought was grey, was really green. What was supposed to be brown was really red. You can imagine as an artist, how this can be a huge weakness. As a filmmaker, my skies were green, and my suns were purple. I had to hire assistants to help me “see” these colors and correct them. In this, I had allowed my colorblindness to be a weakness. Genetically, there is nothing I can do about that. I simply gave up and gave in to this deficiency.

But is it really a deficiency? My eyes see the world the way they do. What if I shifted my perspective? I must find a way to turn my weakness into a strength. Yes, I am still colorblind. But as an artist and filmmaker, guess what? I get to make films and paint pictures where the skies are green and the sun is purple. I get to create works of art to share with the world how I see it. Isn’t that what art is supposed to be? To present material the way the artist sees it? What a gift colorblindness really is then…

I get to be a special minority who processes images and colors in ways most do not. My weakness is now a strength.

By shifting your perspective, you make use of the things you cannot control. If you cannot improve or change your weaknesses, then simply change your perspective.

You may have been in a serious accident that forces you to be in bed. Yes, this is quite unfortunate and is a weakness in physicality. But perhaps this was a gift. This is now an opportunity to write your life’s story and become the next New York Times best selling author.

The following article further explores this concept: I Judge You, I Do: Changing Your Personal Perspective.

Step 3: Take Action

Weaknesses are simply things not yet attended to. When we are able to focus and work on them, weaknesses will dissipate. But know that simply changing our perspective is not enough to overcome some weaknesses. There are some weaknesses within our control. These are the weaknesses that must be shifted through action.

There are some weaknesses that are inevitable. I am not 10 feet tall. So I cannot change that ceiling light bulb without a ladder. It is what it is. But there are many weaknesses, especially behaviorally that are possible to change.

Let’s look at the common weakness of procrastination. This is within your ability to control. Work the steps. Identify why it is that you procrastinate. Why do you push things back and back and then stress at the last moment? How does this behavior increase your stress levels? How does this “unattended” energy weigh on your mind creating mental duress?

Shift your perspective. Instead of saying “Oh I am always the procrastinator,” allow yourself to say, “I used to the procrastinator, but now I am not.” Do not embrace labels that weaken you. Take the more powerful stance. Shift your mind and then you can shift your actions/behavior.

Start small. If there is a bill in the mail, don’t leave it until the last moment. Don’t be late. As soon as you receive the bill, pay it. Then ask yourself what the difference in emotions, feeling and energy is in comparison to your procrastination. Does paying this bill immediately bring about level of satisfaction, peace or simply less annoyance? Does cleaning now, create a less cluttered house and thus a less cluttered mind?

If it serves you, then keep acting upon it. Find bigger and more involved tasks that you keep pushing aside. And instead of wallowing in what you need to do, you can simply go do it. Do feel more powerful and free?

Commit to becoming stronger. When you become aware of procrastination, handle your business. Take the initiative to become the most proactive person you know. Allow yourself to say,”I used to stall and wait, but now I just do.”

And if you are committed and mindful, your old behavior of procrastination will turn into a gift. You will remember what it was like to waste time and mental/spiritual energy. Those memories will serve you, as they inspire you to proactively engage in your tasks immediately.

You can wallow in your own muck, or finally go do something about it.

Let’s look at another common weakness that explores these 3 steps.

Perfectionism:

Step 1: Look at your ego. What pushes you to be so perfect? What part of you has a hard time making mistakes? Does your perfectionism prevent living for fear of failure? Why do you not embrace failure, when we learn more from mistakes than successes? Know when, how, and why this trait holds you back from true growth.

Step 2: You have high expectations of yourself. That is a great thing. Instead of having to be “perfect” at everything, understand that “perfection” may simply be a balance. To be perfect may simply be allowing growth and evolution. Be perfectly human. You are not God. Absolute “perfection” may not be possible. But be the perfect You.

Being perfect isn’t about doing everything right all the time. Perhaps being perfect is simply how you spiritually and psychologically handle these mishaps in life.

Step 3: Those with perfectionist attitudes are usually highly critical of themselves after making errors in life. Instead of belittling yourself, allow yourself to learn from your mistakes. Instead of criticizing your every move, chuckle and laugh when you make bonehead mistakes and learn from them.

Be perfect in the pursuit of self love and happiness. Instead of reacting to negative events, you will learn to flow with ease. If so, you have taken your weakness of being perfect and turned into a strength by allowing yourself the happiest and most peaceful life possible.

In the end, that’s just perfect.

Phobias and Addictions

Posted on 07 September 2010 by Peter Sacco, Ph.D.

FacebookTwitterGoogle+AIMTumblrShare

I

t is estimated that at least one quarter or more of the population suffers from anxiety or some anxiety-related disorder at any given time. Anxiety is the leading instigator for why people are worrying themselves literally sick. Unfortunately, we live in a quick fix society where drugs are handed out like candy! Instead of worrying ourselves to disease, we place chemicals in our bodies (biological treatment) to deal with a psychological cause.

This can be a huge root in alcohol and drug addiction. Many drink and abuse drugs, especially prescription drugs, simply to cope with normal everyday living. Their underlying issues like fear and anxiety become so overwhelming; they need mind-numbing toxins to live a manageable life.

It’s simply mind over matter—in this case we’re allowing the mind to manifest a mental and physiological illness that does not have to exist!

One of the greatest by-products of anxiety is phobias. Today, more people suffer from or possess specific phobias which in some cases rule their lives. Interestingly, when you ask most people why they possess a “specific” phobia, they can’t tell you why or where it came from! Where do phobias come from and why do they exist? For that matter, what is a phobia?

What is a phobia?

A phobia is an irrational fear to a specific object/thing, situation or experience. The most common ones are fears of: heights, water, enclosed places/spaces, public speaking, people/public places, spiders, snakes, flying (planes) and blood. Anything or any situation could potentially lead to a phobia, but it depends on the individual, their interpretation of the event, and of course the situation in general.

What causes a phobia?

A phobia is caused by an event or situation which is perceived to be negative. The event or object/thing within the event was understood as being threatening, or causing a degree of psychological or physical discomfort.

Interestingly, phobias can also be generated “by proxy”- not needing to experience the event first hand. As a matter of fact, they may never come in contact with the specific precipitator causing their phobia. They may develop their phobia by seeing it on television, reading about it in the media, or they are forewarned by a role model usually a parent or older sibling. Interestingly, if you were to ask the role models if they ever had an encounter with what they are most afraid of, they will tell you “no”! They’ve learned by proxy as well.

What can phobias do to a person?

For many, the specific phobias they possess allow them to lead normal lives. What they fear most doesn’t interfere with everyday activities in work, school or home life. People who are afraid of spiders, snakes or flying are less likely to come in contact with those situations since they know how to avoid them.

Conversely, many individuals possess livelihoods and careers which lead them to come in contact with people every day. When these individuals develop public speaking phobias, or agoraphobia (fear of public places), then it can debilitate their lives immensely. Furthermore, the anticipation of the event or the event itself produces overwhelming anxiety. This anxiety creates and fuels the phobia into its own entity-an illness. This eventual illness can become so overwhelming that individuals have to avoid situations which greatly affect their livelihoods and can eventually cost them their jobs and health!

Many people deal with their phobias through self-medication-drugs, alcohol or some other vice. Have you ever heard of the expression “courage in a bottle”? This inference has been made to alcohol and how some individuals need drink to alleviate the symptoms of fear. In essence, alcohol gives them a false sense of courage. Drugs, both over the counter and prescribed anti-depressants/mood stabilizers cloud the perceptions of fear and anxiety by pushing those thoughts in the background. However the repression of such emotions often manifest in harmful physical ways.

For some, the anxiety generated by their phobias leads to excessive smoking, coffee consumption, eating addictions, and sexual promiscuity. If one is not mindful, a fear can create phobias, addiction and illness.

What can be done?

The best treatment approaches for phobias and the anxiety which causes them are:

1.    Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: A style of therapy that focus on dysfunctional emotions, thoughts, and behaviors through goal oriented, systematic processes.

2.    Relaxation Techniques: Progressive muscle relaxation, hypnotherapy, and meditation are great methods to achieve a relaxed state of mind. In this process, fears and anxieties are quelled allowing the exploration of underlying issues.

Seeking out a qualified professional can help alleviate both the stress and anxiety one is causing them self and help them to lead normal, healthy lives. Best of all, it helps stop and/or prevent substance use/abuse.

Common Phobias

•    Acrophobia – the fear of heights
•    Agoraphobia – the fear of open spaces, can be fear of new unfamiliar territories
•    Mysophobia aka Germophobia – the fear of germs, related to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder OCD
•    Claustrophobia – the fear of enclosed spaces and being trapped

Book Review: The Four Agreements

Posted on 07 September 2010 by monkjoe

To get Monk’d, we must continue to evolve our spirit. We must allow ourselves to rest, rejuvenate and dream. We must give ourselves the opportunities to clear our minds and bodies of unwanted toxins. Internal and external strength coincide with each other. So to strengthen our spirits, must explore new and ancient wisdoms to push and simplify this evolutionary process. One such valuable wisdom comes from one Don Miguel Ruiz.

In 1997, The Four Agreements was published. With skill and simplicity, Don Miguel Ruiz provides tool to help us evolve and transform our lives. He gained this wisdom from the ancient Toltec traditions. The Toltec were natives called the “People of Knowledge” originating from the Southern Mexico region. Their community boasts of artists and scientists who were highly spiritual in their practices and education. They believed in the concept of energy all originating from the same one source. Science and spirituality are extensions of this one wholeness.

Don Miguel Ruiz was raised with this Toltec tradition in the rural parts of Mexico. His mother was a Toltec faith healer. His grandfather was a shaman known as “nagual.” He has taken his cultural traditions and presents to us a simple code of living. Through actions and choices we make, we can create a happier, healthier and more productive life.

Here are the Four Agreements summarized by Ruiz. You should always read the full book! This should be a good enough teaser to go out and buy it.

Agreement 1:

Be impeccable with your word – Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Agreement 2:

Don’t take anything personally – Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won’t be the victim of needless suffering.

Agreement 3:

Don’t make assumptions – Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Agreement 4

Always do your best – Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse and regret.

These spiritual laws are simple yet effective. As an evolved Monk, by agreeing to these intentions you will learn to gain power and peace over your own spirit. Instead of reacting to your environment, you get to change your world as the powerful being you are.

Learn to see the s implistic truths that are always present, often too obvious they are missed. Understand the wisdoms that are being shown to you everyday. And then allow yourself the time to master these truths.

It will take work. But this can also be fun. That is the Monk’d balance. Be creative and make this evolutionary process and enjoyable one. :)

Children of Alcohol and Drug Dependents

Posted on 07 September 2010 by monkjoe

FacebookTwitterGoogle+AIMTumblrShare

It is a difficult journey being dependent on alcohol and drugs. This internal battle has many different factors and players that create emotional, spiritual and physical minefields. This creates an unsettling energy often manifesting in a chaotic life. What many people fail to recognize is that there are many more others who are affected by this alcohol abuse.

Loved ones, especially children are also caught in a vicious cycle. By living in this environment, children are extremely sensitive in these early forming years. As research has been recently done to study the affects that these children have, data has shown some clear, interesting trends. Often times, children of alcohol dependants are more likely to have psychological difficulties, learning disabilities, anxiety, eating disorders, and other compulsive behaviors.

Children growing up in this unstable foundation are trained to think and act in certain ways. They learn coping mechanisms and survival skills to manage their lives. Instead of thriving and enjoying life, they use their energy to survive. Some are unattached. Some become the class clown. Others rather bully their way around.

Research developed by Dr. Janet G. Woititz show that children of alcohol dependants:

  • are more likely to abuse alcohol or drugs themselves
  • more likely to have maladaptive compulsive behaviors
  • have unstable notions of normalcy
  • have difficulty completing projects
  • are compulsive liars
  • overly self critical
  • have difficulty enjoying life and having fun
  • can either be overly responsible or irresponsible
  • have difficult with intimacy and relationships
  • have the “black sheep” self image
  • create a tunnel vision and behavior often leading to misfortunes and guilty behavior
  • are constantly seeking affirmation, approval, and identity

Of course these common factors aren’t always the case. Events are introduced into the child’s life. How the child reacts will be how he/she experiences this event. The goal of getting Monk’d is to provide an environment that increases the opportunity to healthy and happy living. Alcohol and drug dependency greatly reduces the odds.

Those children that are succumbed to this environment often bring these maladaptive personalities into their adult lives. Their anxiety reaches higher and higher every day. The nervous cleaning turns into a full blown Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The child who was forced to be unattached as a child, becomes isolated and withdrawn, numb to life. The child that uses humor and play as a self defense mechanism grows to become an adult who is irresponsible and flighty in relationships, careers, and discipline.

But this is never hopeless. The first action is to remove the alcohol and drug dependency from the situation. Get sober. Stay sober. Stay healthy and clean. Then allow the child or the adult with previous baggage to explore their psyche and spirits in therapy. Perhaps a few hours is all that is needed to vent and process. Perhaps years is necessary to make peace with the dark and traumatic moments that are painful to remember.

Truth and honesty with your children is the best route. Know your audience. Speak to them and share what is necessary for them to find their peace. Find balance within, so that you may create balance throughout.
